Ballet Level Descriptions

Children’s Division – Leotard Color, Pink

Pre-Ballet, Ages 3 – 5

These classes are meant to loosely introduce children to the structure of a ballet class, while developing flexibility, musicality, and refining large motor skills. Students must be a minimum of six years old for advancement into level IA and show a readiness for more structured and serious training.

 

Preparatory Division – Ballet I – Leotard Color, Lavender

Minimum Age 6

This is where the basic building blocks of ballet are introduced, and classes become much more structured. Students start to learn the vocabulary of ballet and develop strength. Turn out and leg height is confined to 45°, and placement is carefully monitored. Stretching remains a focus.

 

Attendance Requirements:
IA – 1 ballet technique class per week

IB – 1 ballet technique class per week

IC – 1 ballet technique class per week

 

Beginning Division – Ballet II – Leotard Color, Burgundy

Building on what was learned in Ballet IA, the number of steps is increased. Turns are introduced, and steps are combined to form new ones. 5th position is now used, and turn out, when appropriate, is increased. Leg height is raised to 90°

 

Attendance Requirements: (M=Minimum, R=Recommended)

IIA – M 2 ballet technique classes per week

IIB – M 2 ballet technique classes per week

IIC – M 3 ballet technique classes per week

 

Intermediate Division – Ballet III – Leotard Color, Navy

Placement is refined, and big jumps are introduced. The use of correct arms and heads is emphasized. Students at these levels must attend or make-up 80% of the minimum required classes to be considered for advancement. At level IIIC professional minded students are encouraged to audition for and attend Summer Intensive Programs.

 

Attendance Requirements: (M=Minimum, R=Recommended)

IIIA – M 3, R 4 ballet technique classes per week

IIIB – M 3, R 5 ballet technique classes per week

IIIC – M 4, R 5 ballet technique classes per week

 

Advanced Division – Ballet IV – Leotard Color, Black

This is where everything starts to come together. Technique and artistry start to fuse into one. This is where I start to nit-pick, and details reign supreme. Students at these levels must attend or make-up 90% of the minimum required classes to be considered for advancement, and must attend or make-up 80% of their minimum required classes to remain in their current level.

 

Attendance Requirements: (M=Minimum, R=Recommended)

IVA – M 4, R 6 ballet technique classes per week

IVB & C – M 6 ballet technique classes week

 

Pointe Class Attendance Requirements

All students placed en pointe must attend 3 ballet technique classes a week. Students must reach a level of Ballet IIC and be 11 years old to be placed in Demi-Pointe. Students must reach an age of 12 years old to be placed in Pointe I.

 

Attendance Requirements:
Demi-Pointe – 1 pointe class per week

Pointe I – 2 pointe classes per week

Pointe II – 3 pointe classes per week

Pointe III – 3 pointe classes per week

Pointe IV – 4 pointe classes per week

Point V – 4 pointe classes per week
